“What are silent friends?”

They are the great books we read and admire, that greet us every day on their shelves, that furnish indelible memories of where and when we have taken them and held them open. They don’t speak, but we can do plenty of talking for them.

“Why ‘Silent Friends’?”

Readers of serious literature deserve intelligent discussion that reaches beyond the constraints of mainstream culture, and offers a radical and rigorous social perspective. Letters will be brief and focused on one book at a time, but they will contain incisive discourse that delves to the heart of the matter. There will be some humor and personal touches too. And no trendy theoretical jargon.

“Who are you? why should we care?”

I’m somebody who lives and writes in Brooklyn. I’ve published short stories, essays, and criticism in excellent magazines since 2015. To get a sense of my work, check out my blog Second Slope and my Chill Subs page. I bribed a place to let me study philosophy and literature there for five years, in exchange for two pieces of paper. Here at Silent Friends I aim to create practical literary criticism to the best of my ability.
